Primary Purpose of the Job:
As a partner to the Executive Director (ED) and other board members, the Board Member provides strategic leadership to the organization. Each Board Member must understand the organization’s purpose and mission and provide overall financial and legal oversight to the organization.
Essential Duties:
- Acting as a trusted advisor to the ED as related to each individual’s area of expertise
- Developing and managing relationships and communicating with funders, partners, and other community stakeholders
- Make a personal financial contribution to the organization and encourage other’s within network to do so as well
- As a board member, approving the organization’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
- Providing input to the Board Chairman for an annual performance evaluation of the ED
- Assisting the ED and Administrative Committee in recruiting board members
- Attending all board and appropriate committee meetings as well as organization functions, such as special events
- Serve on a minimum of one board subcommittee
- Acting as an ambassador for the organization
- Ensuring that board members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity
- Remain up to date on developments impacting the organization’s operations and programs
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
- Demonstrated consistent engagement as a volunteer in other ways with the organization
- A commitment to and understanding of the organization’s beneficiaries and mission
- Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Working Conditions:
- Minimum of 1.5 hours per month attendance to board meetings, preferably in-person, but virtual option available to majority of meetings, as needed
- 30 minutes-1 hour per committee – majority meet on monthly basis and virtual option available to most
- 2-4 hours/month for preparation/follow up work outside of meetings
- Attendance to minimum of 1 signature event/year
Terms of Office:
All persons elected to a Board position shall be elected for a minimum of a three (3) year term. A board member may choose to be nominated for a second three (3) year term. A board member may then choose to be nominated for a third term of two (2) additional years.
